Figurative Language Analysis in The Lyrics of BTS Song Swim

Abstract

This study analyzes figurative language found in the BTS’s song lyrics Swim and examines their contribution to the themes of the song. As mentioned by RM, the leader of the group, in a Message from RM uploaded on Spotify that the song Swim is centered on the courage to face life by choosing to move at one's own rhythm rather than fighting the current. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes figurative language in the lyrics based on Perrine’s (1963) classification and analyzed the meaning of each data on its context using Kreidler’s theory of contextual meaning. The findings reveal that 20 lines of lyrics lines contain figurative language. Symbolism is the most frequent type, which appears thirteen times, and is used to convey a profound message of never giving up by using other terms that broaden the listener's interpretation. Hyperbole appears four times, which conveys perseverance and courage in a dramatic way. Simile, metaphor, and personification also help illustrate the singer's courage, persistence, and goals conveyed in the song's lyrics.
