Abstract
Education is important for the progress of the nation, with education the quality of human resources can improve. Education in the 21st century is expected to produce graduates with the required skills, namely Higher Order Thinking Skills. One of the learning methods that can improve HOTS is science learning. In reality, in science learning, teachers still use conventional learning so that students cannot develop HOTS skills. Learning that is not centered on students makes it difficult for students to understand the material given because students are not involved during the learning process. One solution that can be provided is to use the CANLABS learning model which involves students in learning. This study aims to determine the effect of the CANLABS learning model on HOTS of junior high school students. The research was conducted at Yos Soedarso Catholic Junior High School 3 Blitar using a population of class VIII students and a sample of class VIII D students totaling 20 students. The research design uses One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data obtained from the results of the pretest and posttest. The results of the normality test for the pretest value Sig. 0.591 > 0.005 and the posttest value Sig. 0.044 > 0.005, thus the pretest and posttest data are normally distributed. The Paired sample t-test obtained a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 < 0.005, so the results of the study indicate that the CANLABS learning model has an effect on the Higher Order Thinking Skills of junior high school students. Thus, the use of the CANLABS learning model can be a solution to improve the HOTS abilities of junior high school students.
