Abstract
A cellulose acetate plant is designed with a production capacity of 40,000 tons/year using rice straw as the primary raw material. The proposed plant is planned to be located in the Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE), Manyar Sidorukun Village, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java. The cellulose acetate production process consists of several stages. The process begins with the size reduction and drying of rice straw using a crusher and a rotary dryer. The dried material is then subjected to a delignification process using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to remove lignin and part of the hemicellulose, followed by a bleaching process using hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to obtain high- purity cellulose. The purified cellulose is subsequently acetylated with acetic anhydride in an acetylation reactor using iodine as a catalyst through a solvent- free method to produce cellulose acetate. The reaction product is then hydrolyzed, washed, separated, and dried to obtain cellulose acetate that meets the required product specifications. Finally, the cellulose acetate product is stored in a storage tank before distribution. The cellulose acetate plant is designed as a Limited Liability Company (Perseroan Terbatas/PT) operating continuously for 330 days per year. The economic evaluation indicates that the plant generates a net profit of Rp729,968,129,144.71. The Pay Out Time (POT) is estimated at 2.15 years, with a Return on Investment (ROI) of 37.42%, while the Break Even Point (BEP) is 57.03%. Based on the overall economic evaluation, the proposed cellulose acetate plant with a capacity of 40,000 tons/year is considered economically feasible for construction.
