Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in Indonesia and is associated with impaired growth, cognitive development, and future productivity. A history of infectious diseases and inappropriate complementary feeding practices are considered modifiable risk factors for stunting among children under two years of age. This study aimed to examine the association between a history of infectious diseases, complementary feeding practices, and stunting among children aged 6-23 months in Tegal Besar Village, Jember Regency. A cross- sectional study was conducted among 87 mothers of children aged 6-23 months selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, child length measurements, and maternal and child health records. Complementary feeding practices were assessed based on the timing of complementary feeding initiation, food texture, feeding frequency, portion size, and dietary diversity. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and prevalence ratios (PR). The prevalence of stunting was 21.8%. No significant association was found between a history of infectious diseases and stunting (p=0.442). However, complementary feeding practices were significantly associated with stunting, including the timing of CF initiation (p=0.013; PR=2.917), food texture (p=0.020; PR=2.928), feeding frequency (p=0.001; PR=4.582), portion size (p=0.037; PR=3.421), and dietary diversity (p=0.000; PR=9.167), with dietary diversity showing the strongest association. These findings indicate that although a history of infectious diseases was not associated with stunting, inappropriate complementary feeding practices were significantly associated with stunting, emphasizing the importance of promoting age-appropriate complementary feeding practices to prevent stunting among children aged 6-23 months.
