Types Of Writing Tasks In The Elt Textbook For Senior High School

Abstract

Writing skills are one of the important skills that students need to master when learning English. English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia is one of the factors contributing to students' writing difficulties. These students' difficulties include lack of organizational skills, poor idea development, grammar, vocabulary, and inaccurate curriculum in writing learning. This study aims to analyze the types of writing tasks presented in the ELT textbook for the tenth graders of senior high school and to find out which types of writing tasks support the attainment of the writing learning outcomes in the emancipated curriculum. The study used content analysis based on the framework of Ary et al. (2010) and used documentation as a data collection method. Data were taken from the ELT textbook entitled "Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress" for the tenth graders of senior high school, published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The analysis results found that there were 2 of the 3 types of writing tasks based on Raimes (1983) in Kobayakawa (2011), namely controlled writing and free writing. Controlled writing was found 2 tasks. Free writing was found 12 tasks. Meanwhile, translation was not found. Thus, a total of 14 tasks were found in the ELT textbook. Based on the analysis results, it was also found that all types of writing tasks in ELT textbooks were relevant to the writing learning outcomes in the emancipated curriculum. The findings of this study are expected to be useful for English teachers, textbook writers, and researchers to add information about the types of writing tasks, develop writing tasks in ELT textbooks, and become a reference for further research.
