Abstract
Probolinggo Port during the Dutch East Indies era was a small port.
Between 1920 and 1930, Probolinggo became a very important trading port for the
Dutch East Indies. The results of the hinterland with coffee and tobacco plantations,
especially sugar cane which had high export value at that time increased the
surplus income of the Dutch East Indies Government. The problems discussed in
this thesis are the social and geographical conditions of Probolinggo, the activities
and management of Probolinggo Port, and the profits and deficits of Probolinggo
Port for the Dutch East Indies Government in Probolinggo. The research method
used in this study is a historical research method with 4 stages or research steps,
namely: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The approach
used in this thesis is a socio-economic approach with the theory of Singgih Tri
Sulistiyono with his two concepts regarding ports, namely harbor and port. Based
on the results of the study, it is known that with the many sugar factories and exports
in the plantation sector, most of Probolinggo's population depends on the
plantation sector, especially the sugar sector. The Port of Probolinggo facilitated
a wide range of activities, from exports and imports to regional shipping.
Furthermore, the Port of Probolinggo provided telegraph communications, mail
ships, warehouses, and boat transportation. The Probolinggo port recorded profits
until early 1929, when the area was also hit by the global depression, commonly
known as the malaise crisis.. However, this impact did not continue to affect the
people of Probolinggo, as some residents traded through barter, others relied on
agricultural and fishing products, and some migrated to improve their socio-
economic status.
