Abstract
Coconut shells are a biomass waste product available in abundance in Indonesia;
however, their use is still predominantly limited to traditional fuel, resulting in
relatively low added value. One approach to increasing this added value is to
process them into biomass briquettes by adding clove essential oil, which contains
eugenol—a natural mosquito repellent. This study aims to analyze the effect of
adding clove essential oil on the physical and thermal characteristics of coconut
shell briquettes and to evaluate the potential repellent effect against mosquitoes
during the combustion process. The study used a one-factor completely randomized
design (CRD) with four treatments of clove essential oil concentration—0%, 3%,
5%, and 7%—each with three replicates. The parameters observed included
moisture content, ash content, calorific value, burning duration, and mosquito
repellent potential. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA followed by a BNJ
(Tukey) test, while data that did not meet the assumptions of a normal distribution
were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test. The results showed that the addition
of clove essential oil had a significant effect on moisture content and burning
duration but did not have a significant effect on ash content and calorific value. All
treatments met the briquette quality requirements based on SNI 01-6235-2000.
Increasing the concentration of clove essential oil also enhanced the mosquito
repellent effect, with the 7% treatment yielding the best results. The addition of
clove essential oil has the potential to enhance the functionality of coconut shell
briquettes as functional biomass without significantly reducRepelan ing their energy quality.
