Abstract

The eri silkworm (Samia ricini) is a silk-producing insect with considerable potential for cultivation. However, the use of cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta) as an alternative feed requires nutritional enhancement to optimize silkworm growth, development, and reproduction. This study aimed to determine the effect of fortifying cassava leaves with mung bean (Vigna radiata) powder and vitamin C on the performance of eri silkworms. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments: control (P0), 1% mung bean powder + 0.25% vitamin C (P1), 2% mung bean powder + 0.50% vitamin C (P2), and 3% mung bean powder + 0.75% vitamin C (P3). A total of 120 larvae were used as research samples. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 5% significance level, while non-parametric data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by pairwise comparisons. The observed parameters included cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, shell ratio, wingspan, developmental period, adult longevity, larval mortality, fecundity, and egg hatchability. The results showed that feed fortification affected the performance of eri silkworms. The best treatment was P3, which produced a cocoon weight of 1,779 ± 0,295 g, shell ratio of 14,95 ± 3,934%, 0% larval mortality, fecundity of 315,00 ± 19,.49 eggs, and egg hatchability of 91.21 ± 5,19%. Therefore, fortification with 3% mung bean and 0.75% vitamin C was the most effective treatment for improving the growth, development, and reproductive performance of eri silkworms.
