Abstract

The process of configuring replication and backups for the PostgreSQL database system whenever a new project is launched is time-consuming and prone to errors when performed manually. Ansible, as an Infrastructure as Code tool can automate the configuration process and reduce the time required to configure servers. This study was conducted to determine the impact of topology and the number of servers on the time required for Ansible to configure the servers. The Ansible solution was developed using Repmgr and Barman to configure PostgreSQL database replication and backup and then tested against three different topologies based on the project’s development phases using virtual machines provided by the DigitalOcean cloud service, with five tests conducted per topology. The test results showed that Ansible successfully configured PostgreSQL replication and backups across the three test topologies within a timeframe of 6–9 minutes. Differences in execution time across topologies were influenced by the number of tasks that had to be run repeatedly to configure more than one PostgreSQL cluster on the same server. The number of servers also affected execution time by 3 – 5 seconds for each task executed on multiple servers at the same time because Ansible required additional time to confirm whether tasks had been successfully executed on the target servers.
