Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe endocentric and exocentric phrases in
educational news articles on portals that have education sections, such as Detik.com,
Kompas.com, Sindonews.com, and JPNN.com. This corpus-based linguistic research uses
a mixed method with an explanatory sequential strategy, i'e collecting quantitative data
using AntConc software. Quantitative analysis was conducted to obtain the frequency of
use of word sequences that have the potential to form phrases. Using the N-gram feature,
the frequency was set at a minimum of 5 occurrences of the phrase in educational news
articles. The data obtained was then analyzed qualitatively and descriptively to classify
phrases into endocentric and exocentric types. There are three types of endocentric
phrases, i'e coordinative, attributive, and appositive. Similarly, there are two types of
exocentric phrases, i'e directive and nondirective. Based on the results, attributive
endocentric phrases are the most dominant phrases used in educational news articles
identified by the N-gram feature. Through this study, it is recommended that students be
more active in learning endocentric and exocentric phrases based on corpus linguistics,
and that further research expand the object of study in linguistics by utilizing corpus
linguistics to produce objective, systematic, and measurable.
