Critical Listening
Abstract
Critical listening is one of the compulsory subjects that mainly
focuses on training the students to be more critical on the information they
hear or watch so that they are able to make appropriate judgement or
conclusion. This subject will teach students to differenciate facts and
opinion, verify information whether it is relevent or not to support their
analysis and evaluation. However, these skills of course are not easily
learned without proper material and practice. This book provides interesting
topics and tasks that can be used to foster students’ critical listening skill.
Each chapter offers at least two podcasts or videos which are taken
from the internet. The combination of podcast and videos as the materials
could fasilitate students with different learning styles. There are pictures in
every chapter that can be used to stimulate students’ prior knowledge. The
book also provides some leading questions that can be used by the teacher
for pre-listening activity.
The task in every chapter is designed to drill the students to be
critical listeners. Students are demanded to actively engage in the teaching
learning process by completing table, comparing ideas from diferent sources
as well as clarifying arguments or come up with new idea or solution on the
topic they discuss.
Students have the freedom to work on the topics as the scripts of
every podcast can be easily found on the internet which in this case students
will be more autonomous. Besides, all the videos used in this book are taken
from youtube.com which everytime students visit the link they will find
some other similiar topics in the reccommendation view.
