The Effect of Using Nursery Rhymes on the Students’ Vocabulary Achievement
Abstract
Vocabulary has a great role in teaching learning process because by having
sufficient vocabulary, students are able to express their ideas and understand what
others say. But the fact shows that the students still often have difficulty in
remembering the words that they have learned. Therefore, the English teachers
have to determine the effective media to make the vocabulary learning easier to be
remembered and to be understood by the students. Media are expected to attract
students’ attention to the lesson and also to create a joyful teaching and learning
process. In this research, the researcher considered to use nursery rhymes as the
media in teaching vocabulary.
Quasi Experimental research with post-test only design was used in this
research as the purpose of this research was to know whether there was a
significant effect of using nursery rhymes on the seventh grade students’
vocabulary achievement at SMPN 3 Jember or not. The researcher chose SMPN 3
Jember as the research area because nursery rhymes have never been used as
media by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary for the seventh grade
students in the 2018/2019 academic year. The number of the respondents was 64
in total. The experimental group consisted of 32 students and so did the control
group. The respondents of this research were selected by cluster random
sampling; VII-E as the experimental group and VII-D as the control group. The
experimental group got treatment by using nursery rhymes, while the control
group used text as the media.
There were two kinds of data used in this research, that is, the primary data
and the supporting data. The primary data were gained from the students’
vocabulary scores on post test. While supporting data were collected from the
result of interview and documentation.
