Abstract
The problem that often occurs in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the decline in quality of life. Increasing the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes can be done by increasing self-empowerment. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between self-empowerment and quality of life of patients with type 2 DM. The independent variable was self empowerment and dependent variable was quality of life. This study used an observational-analytic design with cross-sectional approach. Respondents in this study were 84 and obtained by consecutive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using the Diabetes Empowerment Scale-Long Form (DES-LF) and Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL). The data was analyzed using by Spearman-rank correlation test with 0.05 significance level. The results showed that the mean value of self-empowerment was 49.48 while the median value of self-empowerment was 51.00 with a minimum value of 38 and a maximum value of 55. The mean value of quality of life was 43.21 while the median value of quality of life was 43.00 with a minimum value of 40 and a maximum value of 49. There is no correlation between self-empowerment and quality of life (p-value: 0.114; r: 0.174). Other factors that can affect quality of life such as physical activity, stress, emotional burden and family support need to be assessed to improve the quality of life of patients with type 2 DM.
