THE EFFECT OF USING STICK FIGURES ON THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ WRITING ACHIEVEMENT AT MTsN KENCONG JEMBER
Abstract
Writing is a means of communication in a written form. It is considered as one
of the four language skills that should be mastered by the students in learning English
besides reading, speaking and listening. However, learning writing is not easy. One of
the possible solutions is applying stick figures as teaching media in teaching writing.
The purpose of this research was intended to know whether or not there was a
significant effect of using stick figures on the eighth grade students’ writing
achievement at MTsN Kencong Jember. This was an experimental research with
Randomized Post-Test Only Control Group Design. The research respondents were
two classes of the eighth grade students taken by using cluster random sampling by
lottery from five classes as the population. Class VIII E was determined as the
experimental group and class VIII D as the control group. The experimental group
was given a treatment by using stick figures in their writing composition. The control
group was not given any treatment. The primary data were collected by administering
writing test to both groups, the experimental group and the control groups. The results
of the writing test of the two groups were analyzed by applying t-test formula with
significant level 5%. The supporting data were taken from interview and
documentation. The result showed that the value of t-test was 2.90 which was higher
than the value of t-table 2.00. It means that there was a significant effect of using
stick figures on the eighth grade students’ writing achievement at MTsN Kencong
Jember. Based on the result, the English teacher is suggested to use stick figures in
teaching English especially in teaching writing to improve the students’ writing
achievement.
