    Abstract
Sleeping is one of physiological need for human that is useful for body recovery process. College students is one of population with high prevalence of sleep problems. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) on sleep quality of student at School of Nursing University of Jember. This study applied pretest-posttest with control group design. The sampling technique was purposive sampling involving 40 respondents devided into 2 groups: intervention group (got PMR for 5 days) and control group (did routine activities) with 20 respondents for each. Sleep quality was measured by using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The data were analyzed by paired t-test and independent t-test with significance level of 0.05. The mean score of PSQI decreased from 10.70 to 3.95 after PMR intervention. The result revealed a signifcant difference of sleep quality before and after progressive muscle relaxation in the intervention group (p=0.001), and there was no signifcant difference of sleep quality between pretest and posttest in the control group (p=0.741). Independent t-test showed a signifcant difference of sleep quality between intervention and control group after progressive muscle relaxation (p=0.001). PMR can activate parasympathetic nerves to stimulate the hypothalamus producing seratonin which make easy to sleep. Overall, PMR can improve sleep quality of student. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) can be used as an alternative intervention to improve sleep quality.
