dc.description.abstract | Depression is an emotional condition usually characterized by extreme
sadness, feelings of unmeaningfulness and guilt, withdrawing from others,
inability to sleep, loss of appetite, sexual desire, and interest as well as pleasure
in the activities usually done. Treatment that can be given to the elderly who
experiences a depression is to provide Benson relaxation therapy. This research
was intended to analyze the effect of Benson relaxation technique on the level of
depression of early old age of 60-70 at Technical Implementing Unit (UPT) of
Social Service for Elderly Jember. The type of this research was a quasi
experiment research with non randomized control group design pretest postest
design. Sampling technique in this research was purposive sampling with the total
samples of 42 respondents, divided into 2 groups: experiment group and control
group. The results of this research showed data that level of depression in the
control group mostly included in the category of fair depression with as many as
14 elderly (66.7%), after the administration of Benson's relaxation in the category
of hard depression as many as 13 elderly (61.9%), while in the treatment group
before the administration of Benson relaxation mostly included in the category of
hard depression with as many as 13 elderly (61.9%), after being given Benson's
relaxation, they came into the category of light depression which was about 9
elderly (42.9%). The analysis used was by Mann Whitney U test Test. The results
showed p value of 0.001 (0.001 <0.05), so Ho was rejected. Thus, there was an
effect of giving Benson's relaxation on level of depression in elderly at UPT
(Technical Implementing Unit) of Social Service of Elderly Jember. The study
suggested nurses use Benson relaxation to reduce depression in the elderly. | en_US |
