    THE EFFECT OF USING FLASH CARDS IN ENGLISH TEACHING ON VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SLTPN 1 CANDIPURO LUMAJANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2000 / 2001

    Abstract
    Learning vocabulary has been regarded difficult by many students in Indonesia. To make the teaching and learning process of vocabulary more effective and interesting, flash cards as one of visual aids can be applied. This research has been conducted to investigate whether the second year students of SLTP Negeri I Candipuro Lumajang in the Academic Year 2000 / 2001 who are taught vocabulary using flash cards in English teaching get better vocabulary mastery compared to those who are not. This research is conducted at SLTP Negeri 1 Candipuro Lumajang. The respondents were determined using purposive sampling method. There were 79 respondents involved. The methods which were used to collect the data were test, interview, and documentation. To analyze the data obtained from the test, the researcher used i-test formula. The hypothesis of this research is the second year students or SLTP Negeri I Candipuro Lumajang in the academic year 2000 / 2001 who are taught vocabulary using flash cards in English teaching get better vocabulary mastery compared to those who are not. From the data analysis and the interpretation on the hypothesis, it was found that the result of the computing value of the students' vocabulary mastery test was higher than the t-critic value with the level of significance 5 %. The t-statistics value was 6.674, and the t-critics value one tail was 1.664. lt was higher, it meant that the effect was significant. The effectiveness of using flash cards in English teaching on vocabulary mastery of the second year students of SLTP Negeri I Candipuro Lumajang in the academic year 2000 / 2001 was 40.365 %. The conclusion is the second year students of SLTP Negeri 1 Candipuro Lumajang in the academic year 2000 / 200I who are taught vocabulary using flash cards in English teaching get better vocabulary mastery compared to those who are not. From this finding, the researcher suggests that English teacher should pay more attention on vocabulary teaching learning process and uses media in it to make the teaching and learning process more effective and interesting.
