Hedging in George W. Bush 2003 Press Conferences As the Reflection of His

This study is concerned with pragmatics especially hedging that is used by
George W. Bush in his 2003 press conferences. It is interesting to analyze 2003 press
conferences because in that year, a controversial policy was made. It was Iraq war.
Moreover, it is conducted to uncover his evasion how hedging can reflect avoidance
of George W. Bush which it will be depicted by the result of dominant hedging. The
analysis uses Grice’s cooperative principle which is led to find out the types of
hedging.
The study applies qualitative method to analyze the data. The primary data are
taken from website

hedging device “must” that shows George W. Bush evades himself through hedging
