STUDENTS’ MISS IDENTIFICATION ON DERIVED ADJECTIVES IN THE SELECTED ARTICLES OF THE JAKARTA POST DONE BY THE STUDENTS OF FACULTY OF LETTERS, JEMBER UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC YEAR 2011
Abstract
There are three tools to collect the data. Those are documentary study,
questionnaire, and interview. The basic data in this thesis are the students’ works
that are taken from 48 students of the academic year 2011 English Department of
Faculty of Letters, Jember University. They analyze the derived adjective words
with additional suffixes in the selected articles on the www.thejakartapost.com
website.
Beside analyzing the students’ works, the researcher analyzes the
adjective words by using Bauer’s theory called branching structure. Next, the
researcher interviews the students whose appropriate answers are less than 50%
based on the result of questionnaires. This interview is done to obtain the
students’ reasons in getting difficulties in analyzing the adjective words. The
result shows that there are 34 words that are not identified correctly. Besides,
there are 36 students who get the inappropriate answers in analyzing the adjective
words are less than 50%.
Based on the results above, the researcher believes that the students still
get difficulties to determine the word function based on the root word when it is
added by some suffixes. Next, there are some students’ reasons for their
difficulties to differentiate the adjective word when it has changeable the function
with the same form, comprising:
1. The students get difficulties to decide the function whether the word has
suffixes or it is a free morpheme.
2. The students are mystified to differentiate the adjective word with another
word function in the same form.
3. The students do not know the root word and also the function of the root.
4. The students do not know the meaning of the word and they confused
because one word has some functions with different meanings.
5. The students are confused when some sentences consist of many clauses.
6. The students decide the word functions depending on their feelings and
they depend on looking up to the dictionary.
7. The students do not know some suffixes, especially the suffixes –ual and
–ial.
