AN ANALYSIS OF PARTICULARIZED IMPLICATURE IN THE DIALOGUES AMONG THE CHARACTERS OF THE DARK KNIGHT RISES MOVIE AS THE RESULT OF FLOUTING MAXIM
Abstract
This study employs qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative method is applied to describe the data in the form of sentences in the movie script and quantitative one is used to count the numbers of type of flouting maxim. Documentary (bibliographical) is applied in this study as the method of collecting data. The movie script is taken from an internet source, http://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Dark-Knight-Rises,-The.html [accessed on July 30, 2012]. Next, the data are examined whether they flout the maxims or not.
The result of this thesis presents that four maxims are flouted in The Dark Knight Rises movie. They are maxim of Quantity, maxim of Quality, maxim of Relation and maxim of Manner. The dominant flouted maxim is maxim of Relation (8 utterances), whereas the least flouted maxim is maxim of Quality (1 utterance). Maxim of Manner and maxim of Quantity respectively follow maxim of Relation (7 utterances and 6 utterances). Besides, there are 4 utterances that flout two maxims (maxim of Quantity and maxim of Manner). The result shows that the characters use implicature because they have reasons. The use of implicature makes them flout the maxims of Cooperative Principle. The flouting of the maxims may cause misunderstanding and wrong inference that are probably made by the addressee if the addressee does not understand the context of situation where the conversation happens.
