THE INFLUENCES OF THE FAMILY CONDITION TOWARDS THE MAIN CHARACTER’S PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT ON ANGELA’S ASHES BY FRANK MCCOURT
Abstract
Angela’s Ashes is a novel written by Frank McCourt and published in
1996. It is about the struggle of the main character who reaches his dreams in
limited condition. This thesis uses psychological approach to show the relation
between literature and the fictitious character and to know the main character’s
personality development influenced by the family condition. Furthermore, this
thesis applies a psychosocial theory of personality development by Erik Erikson
to obtain a deep analysis of the influences of family condition on Frank
McCourt’s personality development.
In order to fully understand the writer conducts this thesis starts with the
general idea about the family condition of Frank McCourt and goes to the specific
idea about the relationship between his personality developments and the family
condition. In this thesis also discuss the role of his father on Frank’s personality
development.
The result of the research shows that the family condition influences
Frank’s personality development. He tries hard to make his family out from
poverty. He also changes his personality to reach his dreams. Therefore, it leads to
understanding that the family condition affects Frank’s personality development.
