THE ANALYSIS ON ARNOLD RUBEK’S PERSONALITY AS AN ARTIST IN HENRIK IBSEN’S WHEN WE DEAD WAKE
Abstract
When We Dead Wake was Henrik Ibsen’s last play. Mostly, this play tells
about professor Rubek as the main character of this play. As a famous artist
Professor Rubek is easily satisfied his physiological needs. Professor Rubek is
identified as an egoistic person and neglecting others feeling, he just thinks about
how the way he can satisfying his highest need, that is self-actualization needs. In
satisfying his highest needs he does not thinks about others feeling around him,
even just to think about love from Irena, the woman who becomes his model.
Further, he gets what he wants for along this time. He becomes a famous artist, he
can reach his dream and also he gets respect, fame, wealth etc, but he never feels
happy because he cannot fulfill his belongingness and love needs. For more than
four years he lives in regret and guilty to Irena. Later, he realizes his fault and this
condition makes his personality change. His personality is change frombad to the
good one. Unfortunately, Professor Rubek is not lucky in his safety needs,
because in the end of this story is tragic. Professor Rubek and Irena are buried
under the snow and die.
The purposes of writing this thesis are, first, to give a clear description
about the needs of an artist and the process of the main character’s personality
development. The writer chooses this topic because personality is a unique subject
that human has to differentiate from one person to another person, especially
personality of an artist. This discussion also to get the understanding about the
personality development of an artist as it is seen in Professor Rubek’s action in
reaching his desire to be a famous artist and his love. The second is to take moral
messages in this play and also to get the understanding of Norwegian playwright
and his work, especially When We Dead Wake.
