dc.description.abstract | This paper discusses the importance of democratic education and its relation to
human rights to Indonesian society. The targeted audience would be Indonesian adult
citizens who have right to vote in the 2009 election.
Democracy requires human rights. Democratic values are rooted from the very
nature of human rights. These values include freedoms, rights, equality, responsibilities,
and beliefs concerning societal conditions and governmental responsibilities for citizens
in Indonesian democratic society. Understanding universal democratic values is essential
but applying them into civic action to Indonesian context requires both sound skills and
robust knowledge.
In addition to providing several requirement for a democratic society, this paper
would employ human relation strategy through discussion of recent specific social issue on golput (lit. white group), or a group of citizens who do not use their right to vote. During the discussion participants are helped to understand cause and effect concepts in order that they are able to learn how to make their reasoned choices and consequences of those choices for themselves and others. This is very crucial to enhance Indonesians’ critical thinking skills as a requirement for citizenship in a democracy. | en_US |
