THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ CHARACTERS AND SETTINGS IN ALEX FLINN’S BEASTLY AND ROBIN MCKINLEY’S BEAUTY
Abstract
This thesis compares two novels which have the similar idea of Beauty and
The Beast story. There are Beastly and Beauty. The two novels are written in modern
era. Beastly is written by Alex Flinn in 2007. It has been chosen a lot of award and
adopted in a movie in 2010. Beauty is written by Robin Mckinley in 1978 and also
got an award. The writer compares both novels through the intrinsic elements.
There are some interesting problems to discuss. The first is finding the
similarities and the differences of the main characters’ characters and the second is
finding the similarities and the differences of the settings within the two novels.
Since the main characters’ characters and settings are the subjects of the
analysis, this thesis uses structural approach to explore both elements of novel. This
thesis uses inductive method, this mean the writer starts from the specific cases to the
general idea.
The result of this analysis shows that the two novels have some similarities
and differences in their main characters’ characters and settings, but each novel has
different way to make the novel interesting.
