dc.description.abstract | This thesis analyzes the verb phrase in different types of sentences from the
articles which are taken from the Voice of America by using tree diagram analysis.
The goal of this thesis is to know the types of sentences found in some articles of the
Voice of America, to show the verb phrase found, and to present the structure of the
verb phrase from different types of sentences using the tree diagram analysis, in order
to help the readers in understanding the verb phrase or getting the message of the
articles.
Generally, a sentence consists of at least a subject and a predicate. Subject
refers to noun or noun phrase, on the other hand, predicate refers to verb or verb
phrase. VP is another important element besides NP in a sentence because VP shows
the action of the the subject. A sentence would not be a complete sentence if this
element (VP) is missing. There are three problems to discuss in this thesis. They are:
what types of sentences are found in some articles of the Voice of America, what verb
phrases are found in some articles of the Voice of America, and how the structure of
verb phrase from different types of sentences in some articles of the Voice of
America. They are represented by using the tree diagram analysis.
This thesis uses deskwork research which is applied by gathering the
information and the data from several books, qualitative data where the data are not
in the form of numbers, documentary study, and descriptive method. Concerning with
the types of sentences, it is concluded that 36 selected sentences are divided into 19
simple sentences, 4 compound sentences, 11 complex sentences, and 2 compoundcomplex
sentences. The verb phrase can stand alone with a verb only, or sometimes
combined with other participants such as PP, NP, AdjP, AdvP, and every VP can be
represented by using tree diagram analysis. | en_US |
