THE COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE VAMPIRE IN STEPHENIE MEYER’S TWILIGHT AND VAMPIRE IN BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA
Abstract
This thesis is comparing an old literary work with a modern one. Dracula is
one of old literary works written by Bram Stoker which got a lot of awards, Twilight
written by Stephenie Meyer is also a literary work which got a lot of awards. This is a
modern one. The writer compares the vampire within these two novels.
Dracula was the first novel that tells about vampire creature. This novel was
published in 1897 and it was the beginning of the other literary works which cover
about vampire or Dracula. Bram Stoker made a terrible character in his novel who is
called Count Dracula. He is an evil creature and he survives with human’s blood. He
is an immortal creature. Another literary work is Twilight, which was published in
2005. This novel also tells about vampire, but the author describes the vampire quite
different from Stoker’s. In Twilight, the vampire is named Edward Cullen. He is a
very gorgeous vampire. Meyer described her vampire out of people might think about
before. There are several things which distinguish Edward and Count Dracula, for
instance; their food. Despite, there are also some similarities of those two vampires.
There are some problems which are discussed in this thesis. First is how the
author described their own vampire in their novel. The second is what are the
similarities and the differences of the two vampires.
Then, to analyze the subject matter this thesis uses a structural approach.
Structural approach is used to break up the intrinsic elements of novel, then this thesis
focuses only on the character and characterization. This thesis uses an inductive
method. It means that the method is started by the observation of the number of facts,
then it is concluded into the general idea.
The result of the analysis is written in the last chapter. Count Dracula and
Edward Cullen have the similarity in the supernatural traits. They also have the
differences such as their origin, their characteristics, their physical appearance, their
way of life, and their era of existence.
