dc.description.abstract | This thesis discusses about the theme of George Herbert’s religious poem The
Sacrifice and the discussion deals with some poetic devices in the poem which
represent and support the theme sufferings and death of the character in George
Herbert’s poem. Those poetic devices are metaphor and simile, imagery, symbol, and
repetition. Each of those elements will be analyzed to prove whether the theme is
right or not.
This analysis is done by collecting the data, reading, and interpreting the
literary work. The data in this thesis will be described in verbal report, since the type
of data is qualitative data. Formalistic approach and historical-biographical approach
are applied to analyze the poem because the analysis will be conducted through
analyzing some poetic devices in the poem. The method that is used to analyze this
thesis is inductive method which draws the conclusion from the specific to a general
one. Meanwhile, the data are collected through library research.
The result of the analysis shows that the theme of the poem The Sacrifice is the
sufferings and death of Christ. Christ suffers for many reasons and Herbert uses some
poetic devices to express and to describe the sufferings vividly and those poetic
devices are very helpful in finding and proving the theme of the poem. | en_US |
