Literature is the reflection of human life. It has close relation to the real life since the source of literary works is obtained from human experiences and the events that happen in society. Literature is a social institution that uses the language as the medium. Cole and Lindemann in Reading and Responding to Literature say that literature is real eventhough, paradoxically, the situations and characters it portrays may be fictive (1990:9). It means that the literature portrays the society in reality. It is strengthened by Wellek and Warren’s statement in their book entitled Theory of Literature. They say that “Literature represents life and life is in large measure, social reality, eventhough the natural world and the inner or subjective world of the individual has also been objects of literary imitation” (1956:110).en_US
