    Abstract
    ultural distinction produces different use of language. Each culture has norm, tradition, and rule in term of living in the society; it obviously includes the communication between one culture and another. A successful conversation includes mutually interesting connections between the speakers and the listeners. For a successful conversation, the partners must achieve an agreement of contributions; they have to follow the rules of communication, what so-called politeness. Politeness is one of pragmatic phenomenon that clearly deviates from the norm of cooperation and has social implication. This thesis describes the politeness strategies in using the words and utterances in communication among the students in academic year 2007, faculty of letters Jember University, especially the Javanese and Madurese culture in showing their politeness. In addition, Java Island with the crowded and high population make the people in this ethnic spread out in many dialect areas. Javanese has many dialects that come from the Javanese language. In relation to the politeness, Javanese has some levels in the use of language that make them politer in daily communication among others. Actually, Madura Island, which closes to the Java Island, also gives a big influence in the language use in some Javanese cities. The focus of the discussion is on the analysis of politeness strategy. This study applies some theories from the experts of Linguistics especially pragmatics. The theories from George Yule (1996), Brown and Levinson (1983), Mc Millan (1992), Blaxter (1996), Kemptson (1977), and some theories from other experts is considers as a theoretical review related to the topic being discussed. Furthermore, Library or documentary research is applies in this study. The data used in this study is qualitative and quantitative data.
