A LEXICAL COHESION ANALYSIS ON SALINA’S SHORT STORY “THE PROTECTOR”
Abstract
This thesis is entitled “ A Lexical Cohesion Analysis On Salina’s Short
Story The Protector”. The problems discussed in this thesis deal with two main
dimensions, they are, how are lexical cohesive devices make the text coherent and
unified?
This thesis uses library research by reading some books in the library to find
out concepts that are relevant to theoretical framework of the thesis. The data of this
study are collected from written texts. The data are qualitative data that are in the
form of description. Documentary (bibliographical) study is applied to this study as
the technique of data collection, and the data are literary form that is a short story “
The Protector “ written by Salina that has been quoted in Samudji’s article in Jurnal
Ilmu Bahasa dan Sastra (JIBS). This study is a descriptive study, the analysis focuses
on the Lexical Cohesion which is concerned with Reiteration (Repetition, Synonym,
Antonym, Hyponym, Co-hyponym, Meronym, Co- meronym) and collocation
occurring in all the elements of the Narrative Structure of the short story, e.g, :
General Prologue, Special Prologue, Central Nucleus (Complication, Peripeteia,
Denouement), General Epilogue, and Special Epilogue. Therefore, the analysis
includes five text of the narrative structure of “The Protector”
After analyzing and discussing this short story, it can be concluded that the
application of lexical cohesive devices such as reiteration includes Repetition,
Synonym, Antonym, Hyponym, Co- hyponym, Meronym, Co- meronym and
Collocation makes the text coherent and unified. The repetition plays an important
role in making the text coherent and unified.
