A Study on The Use of Islamic Stories to Encourage Students’ Interest in
Reading at Grade X Students of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Ashri Jember; Chusnul

Reading is one of the English skills that the students need to master. Through
reading, we can get information and share our ideas to other people around the world.
There are two aspects to increase the students interest in reading such as: First: must
be collected kinds of reading text that can be used to increase their knowledge and
Second, the teacher should use kinds of stories they like. The Islamic stories are kinds
of reading text which are useful to increase student’s interest in reading. They are
many important stories and are useful for human life. Without collected kinds of
reading text and if was not properly used, it is impossible to increase the students’
interest in reading.
This study was a descriptive research in the study on the use of Islamic stories
in enhancing students’ interest in reading of grade X students of Madrasah Aliyah
(MA) Ashri Jember.The purposes of this research were to know the extent of the
Islamic stories in enhancing students interest in reading. The problems of the research
was to what extent do the Islamic stories to enhance the students’ interest in reading.
In determining the respondents, population research was applied because the number
of grade X students was 71.
Data collection method was applied in this research by three ways. They were
questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The primary data was collected by
questionnaires. The results of the data analysis was analyzed to answer the research
problem. Then, it was analyzed by percentage formula was taken from respondents’
answer on the questionnaires. In addition, the supporting data was taken by interview
and documentation.
The research result showed that the grade X students’ have interest in reading
of the Islamic stories. There were 50 students or 70.4% respondents considered that
interest in reading the Moral stories, while 21 students or 29.6% respondents thought
that interest in reading the Prophets stories and there was no uninterested category.
There were 22 students or 31% respondents considered that students’ interest
in the illustrations of the Moral stories, while 10 students or 14.1% respondents
thought the students’ interest in characters of the Moral stories and only 39 students
or 54.9% respondents thought the students’ interest in plots of the Moral stories.
There were 26 students or 36.6% respondents considered that students’
interest in the illustrations of the Prophet story, while 24 students or 33,8%
respondents thought the students’ interest in the characters of the Prophet stories. And
also only 21 students or 29.6% respondents thought the students’ interest in the plots
of the Prophet stories.
By having more reading text such Islamic stories, the students may have more
experience to enhance their interest in reading, because they will read the stories they
like. The teacher is also suggested to give another kind of stories or another kind of
Islamic reading text to the students, so the students will increase their interest in
