THE INFLUENCES OF MODERN ERA TO THE DIVERS’ MARITAL DISINTEGRATION IN F. SCOTT FITZGERALD’S TENDER IS THE NIGHT
Abstract
Marital disintegration is the breaking of marital unity. Many factors can cause
marital disintegration. They are the different backgrounds of life, the different
principles of life, and the existence of the third person. Basically, people’s principles
of life are formed by the society surrounding them. Peoples who life in modern era
will practice modern lifestyle. These principles of life will also practice in their
marital life. A couple who come from different backgrounds of life and has different
principles of life sometimes get some problems in their marital life. It happens
because their principles of life are strongly adopted by them and it influences their
decision in the marital life. Finally, if they cannot solve their marital problems
anymore they decide to end their bond of matrimony or divorce as the last solution.
This thesis analyzes about the influence of modern era to the Divers’ Marital
Disintegration of the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tender Is the Night. Dick
Diver and Nicole Warren are the couple who come from different backgrounds of
life, so they have different principles of life. In undergoing their marital life, they face
some problems which relate with their differences. To avoid the complex discussion,
this thesis is limited on the factors that cause the Divers’ marital disintegration and its
relation with modern era. Meanwhile there are two approaches used in this thesis,
those are Psychological Approach and Sociological Approach.
Dick Diver is psychiatry who comes from a humble family. He practices ideal
and humanistic life. In contrast, Nicole Warren as his wife comes from wealthy
family. She practices hedonistic and practical life. Those differences create some
conflicts in their marital life. These conflicts are also added by the existence of the
third person between them. As the climax of their conflicts, they decide to divorce
and begin their new life with their new partner.
