THE STUDY OF IMPLIED MEANINGS IN TWILIGHT MOVIE SCRIPT
Abstract
Twilight is a romantic vampire film directed by Catherine Hardwicke. It is
based on Stephenie Meyer's popular novel. In this thesis, the writer discusses the
implied meanings of the Twilight film caused by flouting conversational maxims. The
data are gotten from the characters’ utterances that have been transformed in the form
of script. The theory which is used in this thesis is cooperative principle that is
elaborated in four sub-principles called maxims. The four maxims are maxim of
Quality, maxim of Quantity, maxim of Relevance and maxim of Manner. The context
of situation is also used as a supporting theory of the analysis. Since the data in the
form of words, this thesis is regarded as qualitative research. The descriptive method
is used to analyze the data. Firstly, the writer finds out the utterances that flout the
maxims as the data. Secondly, the data are classified based on the type of maxims
they flout. Finally, the writer finds out the implied meanings of the utterances
according to context of situation.
In the dialogues of the characters taken from the Twilight movie script, the
four maxims are flouted. There are three utterances that flout maxim of Quality; those
can be found in scene 16, 24 and 61. Nine utterances break maxim of Quantity, they
can be seen in scene 3, 5, 36 and two utterances in scene 6, 40 and 61. While, the
utterances that flout maxim of Relevance can be found in scene 3, 4, 10, 26, 30, 32,
36, 43, and two sentences in scene 48. At last, there are four utterances in scene 10,
17, 19 and 24 that flout maxim of Manner. From the analysis, it can be seen that
maxim of Quantity and maxim of Relevance are the most flouted.
