Philbricks’s novel In The Heart of The Sea: The tragedy of The Whaleship Essex
into film by Ron Howard. This research aims to identify and analyze changes in
intrinsic elements in the novel-to-film adaptation by creating a table to compare
what is different in the adaptation using the theory of Linda Hutcheon (2006). In
addition, the theory of semiotics from Roland Barthes (1957) is also used in this
study to examine the motives behind the novel and film adaptation of In The
Heart of The Sea: The tragedy of The Whaleship Essex would be to explore the
reasons and motivations that led to the creation of both the original novel and its
subsequent adaptation into the film.
