dc.description.abstractThis research aims to reveal the personality of Otto as a main character in A Man Called Otto movie through the use of illocutionary acts in his utterances. Since the data of this research are the selected utterances of the main character in the movie, this research is qualitative research. This research applies the theory of speech acts by Austin (1962) supported by five types of illocutionary acts by Yule (1996), the context of situation theory by Brown and Yule (1988) and Asthon and Lee’s HEXACO model of personality (2012) as the approaches. The data of this research are taken from the subtitle of the movie which are accessed from the internet website. The result of analysis shows there are 29 utterances of Otto indicated as illocutionary acts, where four types of illocutionary acts are found in his utterances, which are directive, representative, commissive, and expressive. Based on the analysis, it can be seen that Otto’s personality changes over the time depending on the situation happens around him, which can be seen through the use of illocutionary acts in his utterances.en_US
