Revealing Riley's Personality Through The Analysis Of Illocutionary Acts In Inside Out Movie

Abstract

This study discusses a girl named Riley in the movie Inside Out who shows a big change in attitude, as can be seen from the way she speaks. The writer examines how Riley's personality in Inside Out movie can be identified through the types of illocutionary act as the main tool. From the explanation above, it is found that there is gaps that prompted the writer to conduct this research. The gap is that other previous studies only focused on classifying utterances in illocutionary acts without examining other possibility like the personality of the film characters. It is found that the most dominant type is directive, followed by representative, expressive, and commissive. The directive types of utterances are ordering, provoking, requesting, asking, questioning, begging, and suggesting. The types of utterances produced by Riley are related to the traits of the big five personality traits theory, such as emotionality, morality, cooperation, anxiety, anger, and depression. Based on these characteristics, it is revealed that Riley has a combination of personalities. Riley has a low level of openness, a low level of agreeableness, and a high level of neuroticism.
