dc.description.abstractThis thesis analyzes the appraisal systems in five selected news articles from the English-language newspaper, Antara News. The articles are about booster vaccines in Indonesia. The appraisal theory is conducted with linguistic resources and the text draws the journalists feeling through the booster vaccination. The appraisal theory is concerned with attitude, engagement, and graduation. The objectives of this thesis find the most dominant type of appraisal devices used by journalists and explain the journalist's attitude toward the booster vaccine in Indonesia. This study addresses the language which is used in the five selected news articles of Antara News. The data from the language used in the media conduct appraisal systems to analyze the journalist’s appraisal items. Appraisal theory is concerned with linguistics items, such as attitude, engagement, and graduation that conduct in the text. Attitude draws the ways of feeling and emotion of someone as the writer into the text. Engagement deals with the reproduction of opinions in discourse and graduation is the graduation potential. This thesis is descriptive qualitative research. The data source is from the official website of Antara New,https://www.antaranews.com/. It is the tool to collect data by using a documentation strategy in the process of finding data. There are 86 sentences is obtained in this thesis and classify each word that conducted into Appraisal items. The result shows that three appraisal sub-systems are applied in the texts. The finding of the research shows strong engagement for the booster vaccine in Antara News articles which answers the first question that deals with the most type of Appraisal in those five selected articles. It was found that there are three appraisal sub-systems. Those are attitude, engagement, and graduation in 86 sentences which is reduced in word form with 105 appraisal devices and the attitude is positive in all five articles with a percentage 45% for engagement and 49% for the positive affect of attitude. The findings of the research show the engagement is the dominant type from the first until five articles. In term of engagement, there are 80 items appraisal in the selected news with a total percentage 41%. It consists of monoglossic (0%) and heteroglossic (100%). The journalist uses heteroglossic rather than monoglossic. They want to engage the readers through the opinion and reputable of the experts in booster vaccines. The second finding is the positive attitude from all selected articles. The affect is a way to express an emotion being felt or a response to judge something when someone speaks. Journalists' feelings show support for booster vaccination. The journalists get the information from reputable experts to show their affect attitude of appraisal. It can be seen from the word "protection". It is frequently repeated more than three times. The word "protection" draws a positive feeling or a great response from journalists in the selected articles about booster vaccine in Indonesia. This research places strong support to help the government in accelerating the booster vaccine program. The engagement and the positive affect of attitude show the journalists entertainment for their great response for the readers (Indonesian) to be vaccinated. Engagement creates arguments simply and makes a variation in the news articles by journalists. The arguments from the experts which journalists use can convince the readers. The positive affect of attitude is automatically shown because journalists use arguments about the booster vaccine one of which is about the effect it produces. As well as protection is obtained when people have a booster vaccine.en_US
