College Readers Of English Demotivating Factors

Abstract

In the language learning process, reading has an essential role for learners. Some factors can determine the students' L2 learning success. However, it is frequently related to Demotivation in L2 reading. The demotivation in reading will risk students’ failure in achieving the goals in L2 learning. This study uses the theory of demotivation from Dornyei (2005). This research focuses on students' demotivating factors in reading L2 and the influences on their reading L2 class. The data were collected from 62 English department students (19 males and 43 females) during the academic year 2020 at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Jember. It used The EFL Demotivational Questionnaire by Joseph Falout (2009). Further, the open-ended interview using a content analysis method is used to interview three highly demotivated participants. Findings from this study indicated that the factor with has lowest mean value means the most demotivated factor is the internal factor, that are Self-denigration and Self-confidence factor. The external factor which most contributed to reading demotivation is Course-level factor.
