Using Pop-Up Book Media to Improve The Eighth Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement at a Junior High School in Jember

| dc.description.abstract | This classroom action research focused on using Pop-up Book Media to improve VIII-F students‟ reading comprehension achievement. The research was conducted from May 23 until June 9, 2017 at SMP Negeri 1 Arjasa – Jember. The research participants were the students of class VIII-F at SMP Negeri 1 Arjasa – Jember. This class was chosen because it had the lowest mean score of the reading test. Besides that, the English teacher informs that the students of class VIII-F were relatively passive in English teaching and learning process. This research was carried out in two cycles and each cycle was divided in to three meetings: two meetings for executing the action and one meeting for administering reading comprehension test. Each cycle covered four stages that include planning of the action, the implementation of the action, classroom observation and evaluation, and the data analysis and reflection. In this research, interview guide, documentation, observation and reading comprehension test were used to get the data. The improvement of the students‟ reading comprehension achievement and students‟ participation were analyzed quantitatively. Based on the result of the reading comprehension test, the percentage of the students who got score ≥ 75 in reading comprehension test in cycle 1 was 21 students or 67% of 31 students. It did not achieve the target success in this research. While in cycle 2, the percentage of the students who got score ≥ 75 in reading comprehension test in cycle 2 was 24 students or 77% of 31 students. It meant that the percentage of students‟ reading comprehension achievement improved from 67% in cycle 1 to 77% in cycle 2. Therefore, the success criteria of this research that was ≥75 had been achieved, and it proved that using Pop-up Book Media was helpful to improve the students‟ reading comprehension achievement in teaching reading. Based on the result of observation, the percentage of the students‟ participation in cycle 1 was 64.5% students. It did not achieve the target of the research. In cycle 2, the percentage of the students‟ participation in cycle 2 was 74% students. In conclusion, the percentage of students‟ participation improved from 64.5% in cycle 1 to 74% in cycle 2. It indicated that using Pop-up Book could improve students‟ participation in teaching and learning process of reading. In conclusion, it was suggested to the English teacher to use Pop-up Book as alternative media or variation for teaching reading to improve students‟ reading comprehension achievement. | |
