Abstract

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a crucial initial intervention in cardiac arrest and drowning emergencies, particularly in coastal communities where fishermen are often the first responders. Limited access to conventional health training contributes to low levels of BLS knowledge among fishermen. Mobile application based health education offers a flexible and accessible learning approach to improve community preparedness. This study aimed to analyze the effect of mobile application–based health education on BLS knowledge among fishermen in Jember Regency. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post test control group approach. A total of 72 fishermen were selected using purposive sampling and divided into a control group (36 respondents) and an intervention group (36 respondents). The intervention group received self-directed BLS learning through the “BHD-ku” mobile application for one week, while the control group received no educational intervention. Data were collected using a 10-item CPR knowledge questionnaire from Hadiyanto (2015), which had undergone validity and reliability testing. Knowledge levels were measured before and after the intervention. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and the Mann Whitney U Test. The results showed a significant increase in BLS knowledge in the intervention group after the intervention (p = 0.000), while no significant difference was found in the control group (p = 0.726). Post-test comparison revealed a significant difference between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.000). Mobile application–based health education is effective in improving BLS knowledge among fishermen.
