Abstract

This research examines the representation of the Irish struggle for independence in fourteen poems by William Butler Yeats. As one of the most influential Irish literary figures, Yeats frequently explored Irish identity, nationalism, cultural heritage, and political conflict in his poetry. His works reflect the complex historical circumstances of Ireland under British rule and the growing desire for national freedom. The objectives of this research are to identify the themes related to Ireland’s struggle for independence in the selected poems, analyze the poetic elements used to express nationalist ideas, and explain how Yeats represents the relationship between Irish cultural identity and political resistance. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method using a historical and literary approach. The primary data consist of words, phrases, images, symbols, and lines from the fourteen selected poems. Secondary data are collected from books, scholarly articles, and historical sources concerning Yeats’s literary career and the Irish independence movement. The data are gathered through close reading, note-taking, and classification, then interpreted by considering the poems’ themes, imagery, symbolism, tone, and historical contexts. The analysis is expected to reveal that Yeats expresses Irish nationalism through representations of sacrifice, heroism, cultural memory, political struggle, and the desire for freedom. His poetry also reflects the tensions between admiration for revolutionary action and concern about the human costs of political violence. By combining personal reflection with national history and Irish mythology, Yeats transforms political experiences into poetic expressions of collective identity. In conclusion, his selected poems can be understood as literary responses to Ireland’s struggle for independence, demonstrating how poetry preserves historical memory, articulates national aspirations, and invites readers to reflect on the meaning and consequences of freedom.
