Learning Indonesian is a long journey that every student undertakes in mastering Indonesian as a second language after their native language. According to the learning outcomes for Phase A, one of the reading and listening skills students are expected to achieve is the ability to read familiar everyday words fluently. However, this does not align with the results of interviews and observations conducted at SDN Kranjingan 03, which indicate issues with early reading skills. Specifically, 42% of students were classified as fluent readers, 48% as less fluent readers, and 10% as struggling readers. Additionally, some students had difficulty distinguishing between letters with similar shapes and paid insufficient attention to reading techniques such as pronunciation, intonation, punctuation, fluency, and vocal clarity. Thus, these conditions indicate a need for a teaching method that can improve students’ early reading skills regarding the texts they read. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is an effect of applying the reading aloud method aided by picture stories on students’ early reading skills. This study is a quantitative study employing a quasi-experimental approach using a one-group pretest-posttest design, as there was only one class under study therefore data were collected before and after the intervention was administered to the same subjects. Data were collected through interviews, observations, tests, and documentation. The hypothesis results indicate that the Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.000 < 0.05, leading to the acceptance of the hypothesis, which indicates a significant difference between the students’ pretest and posttest scores. The average pretest score was 45.36, while the average posttest score increased to 75.39. Based on these research results, it can be concluded that the reading aloud method supported by picture stories has a significant effect on the early reading skills of second-grade students at SDN Kranjingan 03 Jember.
