Abstract

Sholawat panggung is a modern practice of sholawat that is performed like a concert. In practice, sholawatan panggung introduces new symbols that were not present in previous sholawat. This study attempts to reveal the symbolic meaning of sholawat panggung, specifically performed by Majelis Sholawat Burdah dan Rotib (Masbro). To sharpen the results of the analysis, this study uses the theory of symbolic interactionism by George Herbert Mead, focusing specifically on the concepts of mind and self. The research method used was qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The results of the study found that there are verbal and non-verbal symbols in the Masbro sholawat practice. The verbal symbols include the local language used in sermons and song lyrics, as well as the Mahalul Qiyam recitation. The non-verbal symbols include the music played by Masbro, the attributes used by the congregation such as T-shirts, banners and large flags, and the movements that accompany the sholawat. Four symbolic meanings were then obtained: cultural, spiritual, recreational, and community identity.
