Abstract
Introduction: Late adolescents are vulnerable to various forms of childhood adversity that may persist and affect their psychological development. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) encompass traumatic events occurring before the age of 18, including maltreatment, household dysfunction, and violence outside the home. These experiences can disrupt emotional regulation and healthy psychosocial development, ultimately compromising psychological well-being. This study aims to determine the relationship between adverse childhood experience and psychological well-being among late adolescents at SMA Negeri Arjasa Jember. Method: This research uses a correlational quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling, totaling 267 students. The instruments used were the WHO Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) and the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately with the Kendall's Tau-c correlation test. Result:.The majority of respondents reported mild adverse childhood experience (62.2%). Psychological well-being among late adolescents at SMA Negeri Arjasa Jember showed that the majority of respondents were at a moderate level (67.0%), with low psychological well-being as many as 40 students (15.0%) and high psychological well-being as many as 48 students (18.0%). Bivariate analysis shows the value of p = 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant relationship between adverse childhood experience and psychological well-being with a very weak negative correlation direction (R = -0.190). Analysis: Adverse childhood experience negatively affects psychological well-being through disruption of emotional security, self-acceptance, and positive interpersonal relationships. Cumulative trauma exposure weakens the individual's capacity to fulfill key dimensions of well-being, including autonomy, personal growth, and purpose in life, thereby reducing overall psychological functioning during adolescence. Discussion: The important role of families, schools, and health workers, especially nurses, in conducting early screening for ACEs and providing trauma-informed care, mental health counseling, and psychosocial support to strengthen the psychological well-being of adolescents during this critical developmental stage.
