Abstract

This research analyzes the phenomena of magical things and real things in the play of Shakespeare that is entitled A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The story highlights both phenomena which are emerged as fairy world and human world as the representation of the realms that has purpose to match lovers since their love is seen to face many problems. I use magical realism because the merging of those realms as the important phenomena in the story which become main concept in magical realism analysis. Moreover, magical realism is in-between writings mode which conveys postcolonial and postmodern perspective as the strategy to appear marginal voice. This tool provides five elements that become reference to consider the literary works are included magical realism or opposite. They are irreducible element (marvellous elements), phenomenal world (real elements), unsettling doubts (hesitation circumstances), merging realms (coexisting two elements), and disruptions of time, space, and identity (uncanny poetics to disturb the firmness of time, space, and identity facts). These elements are to find out discourse of indeterminacy which can be seen through defocalization to determine magical realism‘s mode of writing. The analysis also connects to Renaissance conditions and the ideology of the author to know specific significances of this work. Qualitative research is used since the data are in the form of sentences or word. I use qualitative research to elaborate the information taken from primary data and secondary data to become discourse of magical realism as the development of writings in Renaissance era. The primary data are from the narratives and dialogues of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, whereas the secondary data are from the related data such as books, journal, and internet sources to obtain facts and ideologies of magical realism. As the conclusion is always needed in the research therefore the analysis concludes that there is still border between spirits and humans. It means that the in-between of magical realism is slightly found through the analysis. There is distinction between the unreal and real, the traditional and modern which is clarified that Shakespeare tends to be realism as the influence of Renaissance society. Though the hesitation toward magic in the texts is appeared, it is conveyed differently from the real. This text is called as magical realism-like which can be explained as this text consists of magical realism element, but it is not apparently strong. Therefore, magical realism confirms that the text is transition of traditional to modern in Renaissance age as the influences of both sides remain strong.
