| dc.description.abstract | The accumulation of organic waste in traditional markets has become an environmental problem due to inadequate waste management. Mas banana peels and coconut shells are among the most abundant organic wastes that are often discarded despite having high carbon content and potential for conversion into biomass briquettes. This study aimed to determine the effect of particle size variation on the quality of charcoal briquettes produced from a mixture of coconut shell and mas banana peel waste. The briquettes were prepared using a composition of 70% coconut shell charcoal and 30% banana peel charcoal with 10 % tapioca starch as a binder. The particle size, namely 50, 60, and 80 mesh, were evaluated. The quality variables included calorific value, moisture content, ash content, porosity, and burning duration. Experimental data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA or the Kruskal-Wallis test based on the normality test results, followed by Beda Nyata Jujur’s test when significant differences were observed. The results showed that particle size had no significant effect on calorific value, with all treatments exceeded the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) requirement. However, particle size significantly affected moisture content, ash content, porosity, and burning duration. Finer particles tended to increase moisture and ash contents, reduce porosity, and prolong burning duration. Overall, the 50 mesh treatment produced the best briquette quality because it fulfilled most of the SNI quality requirements. The utilization of coconut shell and mas banana peel waste as briquette raw materials provides an environmentally friendly alternative for reducing market organic waste while producing biomass fuel with economic value. | |
