Abstract

Shrimp shell waste is a biomass source rich in chitin that can be converted into chitosan with higher added value. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of chitosan synthesized from shrimp shell waste and to investigate the effect of different volumes of Moringa oleifera leaf extract on the characteristics of chitosan nanoparticles. Chitosan was synthesized through chitin isolation using the autolysis method followed by deacetylation using NaOH solution. Chitosan nanoparticles were subsequently prepared through a green synthesis approach with different ratios of chitosan and Moringa oleifera leaf extract. The materials were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The synthesized chitosan exhibited a yield of 77.6%, moisture content of 6.75 ± 0.11%, and a degree of deacetylation (DD) of 70.49%. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of typical chitosan functional groups, while XRD indicated the semi-crystalline nature of the material. SEM images revealed irregular and agglomerated particle morphology. The results demonstrate that shrimp shell waste has potential as a raw material for producing chitosan nanoparticles through a green synthesis approach using Moringa oleifera leaf extract.
