Abstract

Background: Nursing professionals are facing new challenges due to the growing complexity of patient cases in hospital clinical practice. Nurses must concurrently adapt and respond effectively to patient care demands due to the new challenges posed by information and communication technology-based interventions during the care process. Balancing critical thinking skills with caring behavior is crucial to meet the demands of nursing practice. Objective: This study intends to investigate the association between critical thinking abilities and the compassionate behavior of inpatient ward nurses at Perkebunan Jember Klinik Hospital. Prior research has primarily examined critical thinking skills among student groups. Methods: A cross-sectional corrrelational study was conducted among all 82 nurses in the inpatient wards through total sampling. Critical thinking ability was measured using a NCT-4 Practice, and caring behavior was assessed using Caring Behavior Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were calculated for participant characteristics and study variables. The association between critical thinking skills and caring behavior was tested using Kendall’s Tau C (a=0,05) Results: Participants had a median age of 35 years and the work experience of nurses 10,5 years, were most female (76,8%), with the nurses’ highest education is in the nursing profession (72%) and the majority nurses are married (93,9%). The majority participants also attended the training (91,5%). Kendall’s Tau C indicated a statistically significant in positive direction. Although the correlation is weak, the results showed a substansial positive higher critical thinking skills tend to be associated with preferable caring behavior (|τc | = 0,376, p < 0,001). Conclusion: Critical thinking skills were significantly correlated with caring behavior among inpatient ward nurses. Statistical findings indicated that nurses still lack in the aspects of technical ability, enabling, and maintaining belief. The development of evidence-based practice and the enhancement of clinical reasoning capacity through training and independent literature exploration are recommended to improve daily clinical critical thinking skills.
