Abstract
The addition of a step hull to a planning hull ship will be better and can
reduce the wet surface area, improve hydrodynamic performance resulting in less
resistance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a method for calculating and
approximating fluid flow numerically using a computer. The resistance value in the
180° step hull variation and 150° step hull variation experienced a decrease in the
resistance value compared to the existing model at all speed variations. This
happens because the step hull can reduce the wet surface area so that the resistance
value is reduced. The largest decrease in resistance value occurred in the 180° hull
step variation with a decrease percentage of 2.37%. The ship resistance on existing
ships is 86.54 kN, the 180° hull step variation is 84.49 kN and the 150° hull step
variation is 85.43 kN at a speed of 20 knots. t the lowest lift value occurred on the
180° step hull variation with a lift value of 46.13 kN, while the highest lift value
occurred on the existing one with a lift value of 117.35 kN. Based on the simulation
results of a speed boat with step hull modifications, the 180° step hull variation
shows the highest reduction in drag and lift.
