Eksploitasi Perempuan Dalam Industri Fast Beauty di Amerika Serikat

Abstract

The fast beauty industry in the United States is one of the most active arenas of global capitalism in exploiting women, both as laborers in the production process, as consumers disciplined by manufactured beauty standards, and as performers of unpaid social reproductive work. This study aims to examine how exploitation of women takes place within the fast beauty industry in the United States over the period 2020 to 2024. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a literature review. The analytical framework used is Marxist feminism, Social Reproduction Theory, and commodity fetishism. The findings show that women in the fast beauty industry experience layered exploitation. In the production dimension, women dominate the beauty-sector workforce yet receive wages below the national average and are exposed to serious occupational health risks. In the consumption dimension, beauty standards are constructed through social media to create false needs that are continually renewed. In the social reproduction dimension, women bear the burden of self-care that ideologically benefits the industry.
